Our Curriculum
At Dóxa Theó Christian School each subject area is taught through a biblical worldview and aims to cultivate a love of God and a love of learning in the affections of our pupils. We are also a confessionally reformed school and subscribe to the 1689 London Baptist Confession.
Our curriculum, for the most part, aims to be a Classical Christian curriculum. It is rigorous, teacher led and student oriented. Much of it is knowledge-based, whilst seeking to captivate and inspire the imaginations of our students and thus develop key skills for their future.
What about the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence?
Our curriculum aligns to a fair extent with the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence in terms of learning outcomes, ensuring students can easily transition from any Scottish school. However, the school's approach differs from the CfE's ethos. While the CfE focuses on a general education, we aim to reveal the beauty of creation, the importance of truth and virtue, and the love of God. This Christian perspective guides the school's curriculum, but it still adheres to the CfE's learning objectives to provide students with the necessary qualifications.
Literacy and English
The study of literacy consists of 5 components: reading, writing, spelling, grammar and handwriting. As the children grow in their competence with literacy, they are enabled to begin the serious study of the English language through exposure and imitation of the great literature of the Western world.
Numeracy and Maths
At our school we follow the CPA approach, this stands for concrete, pictorial and abstract. The children move through these levels within a range of topics as they develop their mathematical thinking.
Health and Wellbeing
This subject covers health and hygiene, physical education and character development. These areas are interdisciplinary and can be integrated in other subjects such as science or Biblical studies. We recognise the importance of physical exercise for children and introduce them to a variety of sports and exercises. We also use this subject to educate on rules, health, safety and manners.
Biblical Studies
We subscribe to the 1689 London Baptist Confession and this area of the curriculum permeates throughout the life of our school. We will hold daily assemblies that teach through the Baptist catechism and will have weekly lessons on Christianity and the scriptures. Children will also learn to sing a variety hymns, psalms and spiritual songs.
Social Studies
This curriculum area covers the subjects of history, geography and anthropology taught through a biblical worldview. As part of this subject area, pupils may learn about other religions and worldviews. They will learn to critically examine them at appropriate stages of their development.
Sciences
In the early years there is a strong emphasis on wonder and appreciation for God's world. Our Science curriculum is Bible-based and Creator-centred and is a very active area of our curriculum in which the children take part in various experiments and activities.
Expressive Arts
Our arts curriculum covers two main areas: Fine art and Music. Our curriculum will introduce pupils to the history of art and will give them the opportunity to learn and practise using different elements. In music we also cover performance and drama and we aim for each student to gain a basic musical literacy including the reading of music notation.
Technologies
We seek to give children the opportunity to learn a wide variety of skills, ranging from competence in crafts and culinary basics all the way to digital literacy and basic computer science.
It is important to note, that we wish to be a low-tech school and avoid the use of digital technology until the later stages of child development. In P6 and P7, children will begin to study computer science as preparation for secondary school.
